Paralegals perform a variety of tasks* to support lawyers, including maintaining and organizing files, conducting legal research and drafting documents, and helping them prepare for hearings, trials, and corporate meetings. They typically work in law firms, corporate legal departments, and governmental agencies.

Most paralegals and legal assistants have at least an associates degree or a certificate in paralegal studies.

The Moraine Valley paralegal program is offered at the main campus in Palos Hills.

*Paralegals do not set legal fees, give legal advice or represent clients in court proceedings.

Moraine Valley’s Paralegal Studies Program requires that your entire first year (18 semester hours) of legal specialty (100-level) coursework be completed in a synchronous format. A synchronous format provides for real-time interaction with your professor and your peers. This format also allows you to collaborate on in-class activities and discussions. Most of your second-year legal specialty (200-level) coursework is offered in an asynchronous online format. This allows you to work on each week’s deadlines on your own time and at your own pace with online feedback from your professor and your peers. Please see program coordinator, Professor Dave O’Connor (oconnor@morainevalley.edu), for any questions about your program or this policy.
