The 911 Academic Theater Department presents its thrilling and gripping play, “The Birds,” Feb. 27 to 28 and March 6 to 7, at 7:30 p.m., and March 1 and 8 at 3 p.m., in the Fine and Performing Arts Center’s (FPAC) John and Angeline Oremus Theater, 9000 W. College Parkway in Palos Hills.
Daphne du Maurier’s short story, upon which Alfred Hitchcock based his classic film of the same name, was adapted into a play by Conor McPherson, examining the dynamics of human relationships in the face of societal collapse.
In an isolated house, strangers Nat and Diane take shelter from a relentless mass of attacking birds. They find some sanctuary, but comfort and peace elude them as the house lacks electricity and sufficient food. Meanwhile, a nearby neighbor may still be alive and watching them. Julia, another refugee, arrives with news of the outside world, but she adds discord to the house. Their survival becomes increasingly perilous as paranoia takes hold and creates an internal threat, matching the chaos of the birds outside.
The cast includes:
- Nat – Saul Delgadillo, of Orland Park
- Julia – Emma Foster, of Palos Heights
- Tierney – Rafael G. Garcia, of Palos Hills
- Diane – Sarah Matchen, of Orland Park
