The Fine and Performing Arts Center is extending an opportunity to bring students to the schooltime show of Bill Blagg’s
The Science of Magic! It is only open to school or homeschool groups.

Suggested for Grades 1-5 | 55 minutes, no intermission
Tickets are$9 perstudent/teacher/chaperone, and the organizer ticket is free.

For centuries magicians have used scientific principles to make people levitate in mid-air and vanish in the blink of an eye. Illusionist Bill Blagg’s one-of-a-kind educational experience, The Science of Magic, takes students on a rare, never-before-seen journey “behind the scenes” of the magic world. Students will discover firsthand how magicians use science to create the impossible!

Bill’s comedy-filled, action-packed, presentation is highly interactive and makes science fun and exciting! Students will use the Scientific Method to levitate one of their teachers in mid-air and even learn how the science of reflection can make their homework magically disappear! In addition, Bill even performs some of his mind-blowing, grand-scale illusions with a scientific twist! Bill caps the show off with an incredible display of the water cycle by making it snow from his bare hands! Students will watch in amazement as science creates magic right before their very eyes!

The Science of Magic is designed to excite, educate, intrigue and promote students to think “outside the box” and spawn their curiosity about how science and the Scientific Method are used by magicians to create the impossible!

Learning Connections: Scientific Method, Mirrors/light reflection/refraction, Trial and error, The value of failure, Nature of solids, Center of gravity, Physical Properties, Physical Changes, Perspective, Magnetism, Theatre/drama, Willing suspension of disbelief, Problem solving, States of Matter, and The Water Cycle

Tickets must be reserved via conwayt38@morainevalley.edu or by phone at 708-974-5492. Seating is limited, and please let us know if you need wheelchair accessibility at the time of your reservation. Once we receive your ticket count, we will submit an invoice to you for payment.

Our inaugural STEM Expo was held on May 5, 2017. Since then, annually in the spring, the STEM Expo hosts district seventh graders at Moraine Valley to engage in fun, educational and hands-on STEM activities. The event is free and requires middle schools to complete an application to participate. Participating schools are encouraged to bring diverse students – from students already extremely interested in STEM to students that may have never considered a career in STEM.

Our STEM Expo is unique in that students participate in three or more small group sessions on a specific topic with a designated STEM workforce or faculty presenter. This component of our Expo is in addition to a keynote session and time in our Exploration Zone, which is set up in the more traditional exhibition hall format.

Past small-group session topics have included:

  • Architecture is Science, Math and Art
  • Automotive Electronics in Practice
  • Brain Games!
  • Build a Better Battery
  • Cybersecurity
  • Human Cadaver Demonstration
  • Interactions with Animals
  • KidRec – Fit Minds and Bodies
  • Logical Thinking and Problem Solving
  • Particle Accelerators
  • Physics Wonderland
  • Probabilities and Dungeons and Dragons
  • Ready, Set, SET! The Math Behind the Game of SET
  • Sensation and Perception
  • Skeletons, Specimens and Slides Biology Scavenger Hunt
  • Small Business Profitability
  • Squishy Circuits
  • Using Probability to (Probably) Win Games
  • Veggie Chemicals – How you Can Turn Corn into Slime and More
