Join our one-hour jigsaw puzzle challenge!
If you are a puzzle person (and if you are, you know that you are), then this is the event you have been waiting for.

Compete solo or in pairs to complete a 100-piece puzzle in the fastest time.

Individual Competition:
Participants entering in the individual contest will have to assemble a 200-piece jigsaw puzzle in a time limit of under 60 minutes. In the case of not finishing before the maximum time, the number of correctly placed pieces will be counted and recorded to make up the classification.

Pairs Competition:
Up to 2 people entering in the pairs contest will have to assemble a 300-piece jigsaw puzzle in a time limit of under 60 minutes. In the case of not finishing before the maximum time, the number of correctly placed pieces will be counted and taken to make up the classification. The participants who complete the puzzle with the fastest time (or in the case of a tie, the most pieces assembled in an hour) in each division will be pronounced the winners.

How to Enter:
See the librarian to schedule your timed entry or . If you sign up online, you will be notified of your official start time. Participants can select a start time on the following dates and times: Tuesday, April 8 at 1 p.m., 2 p.m., or 3 p.m. or Wednesday, April 9 at 9 a.m., 10 a.m., or 11 a.m.

Rules:

  • Check into the library before your start time.
  • You will be assigned a table and puzzle.
  • Time is started, recorded, and ended by library staff.
  • Contestants will not know what puzzle they will work on until their competition time.
  • Puzzles provided by the library are the only ones allowed.
  • There will be at least 1 moderator on the floor.
  • Competition will be single round (until further notice).
  • Stick to your own station.
  • Official breaks will not be given, but if you would like to take a break feel free to do so on the time.
  • No outside help is allowed.
  • Do not distract or harass any other players. Semantics are not allowed. Players who have disturbed other contestants will be disqualified.
  • Earphones are allowed, please keep them at a low volume as to not disturb others.
  • If there are lost pieces from the puzzle, you will be granted 5 seconds extra to look for said pieces. Any number over 5 lost pieces voids the run.
  • Sitting and standing is allowed, please be aware of your surroundings.
  • Participants can compete in both brackets and have one attempt in each bracket. ex: singles once, and pairs once.

Art as Healing and Resistance: Artist Mary Hazboun Explores her Journey with 鈥淭he Art of Weeping鈥
Thursday, Feb. 22 | 12:30 p.m.
Mary Hazboun is a multidisciplinary Chicago-based artist who practices 鈥淭he Art of Weeping鈥 as an act of processing grief and somatic healing of bodies through drawing and singing. Hazboun鈥檚 work highlights the nuanced traumas of women and their resistance against different forms of oppression manifested in the military machine, patriarchal societies and forced migrations.

 

Almost Amounted to Agony: Grappling with Anxiety in 鈥淔rankenstein鈥
Wednesday, Feb. 28 | Noon – 1 p.m.
鈥淔rankenstein鈥 and its main characters have been an inflection point to discuss contemporary cultural issues, which have varied greatly in the last 200-plus years. In this talk, we will explore how anxiety manifests in 鈥淔rankenstein鈥 as a feeling grappled with by characters and how contemporary issues around mental health continue to engage themes from the book.

 

The Creature Within: Using Psychology to Understand Frankenstein鈥檚 Monster
Tuesday, March 5 | 11 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.
Mary Shelley presents a 鈥渕onster鈥 whose very existence is complex and difficult. The monster turns his abandonment, abuse, neglect and maltreatment into hatred and revenge upon his creator. In this panel discussion, psychology faculty will use Frankenstein鈥檚 monster as a lens through which we can understand psychological theory.

Frankenstein鈥檚 monster has undergone a type of evolution beyond the pages of the novel that birthed him. The monster has been born and reborn within many cultural contexts. This talk by Vito Carli will examine the different incarnations of Frankenstein鈥檚 monster, examining how the character has changed over several decades.

Faith and Spirituality Leading the Environmental Movement

Rev. Brian Sauder will discuss the connections between faith and environmental justice. He is the executive director of Faith in Place, which is a nonprofit that partners with communities of faith from diverse religious traditions (and people who do not follow a faith) to advance environmental and racial justice.
